Don Hunt Memorial Challenge
| HISTORY OF THE SUPER 2 CHALLENGE
The Super 2 Challenge, as it has unofficially been
called, began in fall of 1998 as a result of the break-up of the
East Penn Conference. In desperate need of independent games for
the 1998-99 season, the 5 remaining conference members (Allen, Becahi,
CCHS, Dieruff and Emmaus) developed a challenge concept pitting
the EPC against the Philadelphia Catholic League in a variety of
sports. The sports selected for that first year were cross-country,
field hockey, boys’ soccer, boys’ basketball, girls’
basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball and track. Once the concept
and match-ups were solidified the conference focused on finding
a sponsor. Service Electric Station Manager Don Hunt enthusiastically
embraced the idea and offered financial backing and television coverage
for the entire series; thus the origin of the original name, “The
Service Electric Super 2 EPC – PCL Challenge”. Throughout
its 9 year history the challenge has gone through some necessary
changes such as the streamlining of sports, the addition of new
venues, the infusion of new opponents and the unfortunate and untimely
passing of Don Hunt. . |
What has not changed
however is TV 2’s commitment to the youth of the Lehigh Valley
and their financial support (which this year will exceed $150,000
in cash and contributions such as t-shirts, water, transportation
costs, official fees and site costs). Utilizing the creativity and
enthusiasm of Sports Director Mike Zambelli the challenge has evolved
into a solid 4-sport competition (cross country, field hockey, boys’
soccer and softball) that is viewed as one of the highlights of
the sports season. Now, as we prepare to enter our 10th year of
competition the newly named “Don Hunt Memorial LVC
Challenge Series Sponsored by Service Electric Cable TV”,
offers this unique opportunity to many more student athletes and
fans from the local area. So, on behalf of the 12 member schools
of the LEHIGH VALLEY INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE we wish
to thank Service Electric President John Walson, Jr., Station Manager
Andy Himmelwright, Sports Director Mike Zambelli and their staffs
for their continued support and sponsorship of this event. Without
Service Electric and 2 Sports the challenge series would not be
possible. |
